EASA STS preparation
STS-01 and STS-02: the main differences
Compare the aircraft, operating environment, visual contact and practical training required by the two European standard scenarios.

STS-01: visual line of sight with a C5 drone
STS-01 keeps the aircraft within the remote pilot’s visual line of sight over a controlled ground area that may be in a populated environment. It uses a compliant class C5 aircraft. The pilot needs the theory certificate and the relevant STS-01 practical accreditation. All scenario conditions apply together.
STS-02: beyond visual line of sight with a C6 drone
STS-02 permits a defined beyond-visual-line-of-sight operation over a controlled ground area entirely in a sparsely populated environment, using a compliant class C6 aircraft. Without airspace observers, the aircraft must remain within 1 kilometre of the pilot and follow a pre-programmed trajectory when beyond visual line of sight. With observers, the scenario permits up to 2 kilometres from the pilot, subject to the observer-distance, coverage and communication requirements.
Both require a controlled operation
Neither scenario is permission to fly wherever you choose. Check the ground area, operational volume, buffers, geographical zones, procedures, aircraft and crew competence. The operator submits the relevant declaration and receives confirmation of receipt and completeness. A flight outside the conditions needs another applicable route.
Use the STS syllabus checklist and practical-provider checks.
