The full theory examination

Attachment A to Chapter I of Appendix 1 requires at least 40 multiple-choice questions across eight subjects, assessing knowledge of technical and operational mitigations. The passing requirement is at least 75% of the overall marks. On a 40-question paper with one mark per question, that is 30 correct answers.

The reduced examination for A2 certificate holders

If the candidate already holds the A2 certificate of remote pilot competency, the regulation sets at least 30 questions across five subjects: regulations, human performance, operational procedures, ground-risk mitigations and general UAS knowledge. Confirm the evidence and booking route with the examining body. This provision does not remove the separate STS practical requirements.

Duration is not uniform across Europe

The examining body confirms duration, language, permitted materials and identity checks. For example, Spain’s AESA currently describes 40 questions in 40 minutes for the A1/A3 route and 30 questions in 30 minutes for A2 holders. Those are Spanish arrangements, not Europe-wide timers. Airspace School’s full STS mocks use 40 questions in 60 minutes.
