Preparing to retake an A2 examination

Use the examining body’s retake rules and your result information to plan focused A2 revision after an unsuccessful attempt.

Check the rules of the examining body

Do not import the FAA’s retake waiting period into an A2 plan. Confirm whether you need a new booking, how many attempts remain, whether another fee applies and whether there is a waiting period or an expiry date for your application. These arrangements must come from the body running your exam.

Identify why the attempt fell short

Use any feedback the examining body provides without copying or distributing protected exam questions. Sort your gaps into meteorology, flight performance and ground risk. Distinguish missing knowledge from misread units, overlooked conditions or running out of time.

Change the preparation, not just the booking

Return to the specific lesson behind each weak area. Explain it without notes, try a different preparation question and review the source. Then attempt a fresh mock under the relevant conditions. Repeatedly retaking the same preparation paper can hide gaps through familiarity.

Use the A2 study plan and exam format guide to organise the next attempt.
